The question that everyone was asked this week was:
If you could "unread" a book, which one would it be? Is it because you want to start over and experience it again for the first time? Or because it was THAT bad?
The immediate answer that comes to my head in response to this question is The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. If there is one book that I hate with a passion, it is The Catcher in the Rye. Hate it. I do partly blame myself, as I had high expectations for the book and was very excited to read it, but when I did it was just... awful. I don't actually wish to 'unread' it because it was awful though, but rather so that I can experience it again and see if I feel any differently to what I did a couple of years ago. Since it took me so long to trudge miserably through it the first time, the thought of re-reading it makes me groan, but I really do want to know why it's a classic and why so many people love it. It's just one of those books where I really can't understand why it's so highly regarded. I really just couldn't stand Holden and his whining.

I can't do most classics, the writing styles always seem a chore to get though. Sorry you had such a bad experience with this one. One classic I did enjoy was How to Kill a Mockingbird. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
ReplyDeleteOh, yes, The Catcher in the Rye! Had to read this in high school for my Senior Composition class and hated every second of it. Holden was awful.

ReplyDeleteI don't know if there is a book I wish I could un-read because, I don't know I guess I value even the bad storytelling. But I totally understand what you mean about Catcher in the Rye.
I don't know that Catcher in the Rye improves with a second reading... If you want to give Salinger another try, though, I recommend Nine Stories. Thanks for the visit! Subscribing through RSS and will follow on Twitter. :)

I just read Catcher in the Rye a couple of weeks ago. I really liked it. Holden was whiny, but I think I kind of understood it. I'm not sure why It's a classic, though. It's certainly not the best book I've ever read. I don't know.
ReplyDeleteIt is a shame to hate a book... because then if you ever do reread it, it's with a huge bias. It would be nice to unread some of them and start fresh.

Read this in 10th grade. I'm sure if I read it again I would enjoy it a lot more. Reading under deadlines and for a grade really puts a damper on my book relationship

Believe it or not I haven't read that book, but I have heard some not so good things and bad things. Just not sure If I want to give it a try.

I am so glad that I am not the only who didn't like Catcher. I HATED that book so much. I really wish I could get the time I spent reading it back.

Mhm...actually I think especially among classics the polarisation is huge! Some people love that one particular book, some people love it!
ReplyDeleteI always tried to find time to read it these past few years, but never got around to it - I always had some other book, or schoolwork, or I couldn't find a copy, etc. I've pretty much crossed it off my reading list because of procrastination, haha. ReplyDeleteI like the way your looking at this, willing to give it another first chance, most other blogs are just disregarding the books. Interesting concept, I think I would like to unread something from school like Pride & Prejudice as I hate it with a passion from having to study it, maybe if i read it fresh now I would like it. Guess we'll never know

That's so interesting because TCitR is a book SO many people love. I am sure I read it in high school but I don't remember much about it. I think I'd like to re-read it, too!
